The Puzzle of the Iron Key
Episode 2: The Outside Lock
Before Julian could examine the schematics further, the overhead fluorescent lights in the archive room flickered and died, plunging the windowless basement into absolute darkness. A heavy steel security shutter slammed down over the archive room door with a resounding crash, sealing them inside. “We’ve been locked in,” Marcus warned, drawing his service weapon as red emergency lights hummed to life overhead. A synthesized electronic voice echoed from the archive’s intercom speaker: “Cease your investigation immediately, or the oxygen supply in this room will be purged in ten minutes.” Julian realized someone within the bank director’s office was desperate to prevent the vault from opening. Working rapidly in the dim red light, Julian accessed the archive’s digital ventilation control panel on the wall, using his multi-tool to cross-wire the manual override switches. With a sudden hiss of released pressure, the ventilation ducts opened, flooding the room with fresh air just as the digital timer reached zero.
The Missing Blueprint
Regaining their breath, Julian and Marcus examined the architectural scrolls more closely, noticing that the final, crucial page detailing the master key’s physical dimensions had been cleanly torn from the roll. Someone had sabotaged the archive files before their arrival. However, the pressure-sensitive impression left on the underlying wooden table still showed the faint indentation of the missing drawing. Julian grabbed a soft graphite pencil, lightly shading across the indented wood surface until the precise geometric shape of the master key materialized on the paper like magic. It wasn’t a traditional metal key at all; it was a complex binary gear template that had to be cut from a specific alloy of titanium and brass. Julian photographed the pencil rubbing with his digital camera, transferring the file to his portable CNC metal-cutting lathe back in his downtown workshop.
