The Puzzle of the Iron Key
Episode 4: The Hidden Mechanism
Julian ignored Thorne’s taunts, stepping up to the towering steel vault door with absolute calm. He inserted the custom titanium-brass key into the primary cryptographic slot, feeling the internal tumblers engage with a smooth, satisfying mechanical click. Following the geometric sequence derived from the blueprint impressions, he rotated the key three times clockwise, paused at the zero mark, and pressed a hidden center release button. A deep, seismic mechanical groan echoed through the reinforced concrete foundations of the entire building as fifty massive steel deadbolts retracted simultaneously from the vault frame. The colossal three-ton steel door swung outward smoothly on its oiled hinges, revealing the cavernous interior of the central reserve vault for the first time in half a century. The auditors gasped in awe as the beam of their flashlights illuminated towering stacks of gold bullion bars stretching into the darkness.
The Midnight Escape
Before the auditors could step inside, Victor Thorne drew a hidden pistol from his coat, grabbing Director Arthur Pendelton by the collar and holding the barrel against his temple. “Nobody move! Open the back service elevator, or the director dies right here!” Thorne screamed, his eyes wild with frantic desperation. Marcus Vance moved to intervene, but Thorne fired a warning shot that chipped the marble floor tiles. Realizing he was trapped, Thorne backed into the open vault doorway, intending to lock himself inside with the gold reserves. In a flash of decisive action, Julian leaped forward, kicking a heavy brass doorstop beneath the massive vault door’s automatic hydraulic closer just as Thorne slammed the door shut. Because the doorstop prevented the heavy deadbolts from re-engaging, the vault door remained cracked open by two inches. Marcus and the federal agents rushed forward, throwing their weight against the heavy steel door and subduing Thorne instantly before he could secure the latch from the inside.
