Episode 2: The Stolen Constellation

Alden slipped behind a stack of heavy canvas star-charts just as the heavy oak door of the gallery clicked open. A sliver of pale moonlight cut through the darkness, illuminating a tall figure draped in a charcoal cloak. The intruder moved with practiced silence, carrying a brass lantern that emitted a subdued amber glow. Alden held his breath, watching as the stranger walked directly toward the secondary celestial globe. With gloved fingers, the figure traced a line across the painted bronze surface of the northern quadrant. Suddenly, one of the inlaid silver stars popped out of its socket with a soft metallic click. The stranger pocketed the metal star and turned sharply toward the main refractor telescope. Alden’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird beating its wings against iron bars. If the intruder discovered him hiding here, all hopes of unraveling the observatory’s mystery would vanish. The stranger muttered an incantation under his breath, and the emerald light within the telescope instantly dimmed. A wave of cold air swept through the chamber, extinguishing Alden’s floor lantern without warning. In the sudden darkness, the sound of heavy footsteps receded rapidly toward the spiral staircase. Alden waited ten agonizing minutes before daring to emerge from his cramped hiding spot behind the canvas. When he finally crept over to the celestial globe, he saw that the constellation of the Weaver had been entirely gouged out. Only a jagged empty depression remained where the silver stars had rested for over a century. He realized that someone else was hunting for the ancient mechanism hidden beneath the observatory dome.

Maps of Midnight

Determined to piece together the missing components, Alden spent the entire afternoon reviewing the archive blueprints. The blueprints, drafted by the observatory’s founder Master Thaddeus, revealed a hidden basement beneath the rotunda. According to the faded ink notes, this sub-level housed the primary calibration engine for tracking unmapped celestial bodies. Alden descended into the damp cellar with a newly trimmed wick in his oil lantern, coughing slightly from the mildew. The stone walls were lined with rows of glass jars containing mineral samples and crystallized atmospheric condensation. At the far end of the cellar stood a heavy iron door secured by a complicated numerical combination lock. The combination, Thaddeus had noted on the margin, corresponded to the coordinates of the stolen silver constellation. Alden pulled out his journal and calculated the missing positions based on the remaining marks on the bronze globe. His fingers shook as he dialed the brass tumblers one by one, listening for the internal clicks. On the final turn, the heavy internal bolts retracted with a deep, satisfying thud that vibrated through the floor. He pulled the iron door open, revealing a small, windowless chamber bathed in a soft, self-sustaining violet glow. In the center of the room rested a massive slate table covered in glowing cartographic etchings. These etchings mapped out star systems that modern astronomy had never recorded in any official compendium. It was clear that the observatory was designed for something far grander than simple stargazing.
