Episode 3: The Glass Telescope

Stepping further into the violet-lit vault, Alden approached the slate table to examine the intricate cartographic etchings. Each map was carved into plates of translucent obsidian that shimmered like liquid glass under the ambient light. He picked up a magnifying loupe and inspected a cluster of lines representing a planetary orbit around a binary sun. Suddenly, the obsidian plate projected a three-dimensional holographic projection into the center of the room. The projection displayed a miniature mechanical solar system rotating smoothly in mid-air without any visible power source. Alden reached out his hand, and his fingers passed directly through the glowing illusion without feeling resistance. Within the center of the projected system, a tiny keyhole floated precisely where a central sun should be. This must be the mechanism that controlled the entire celestial alignment engine beneath the foundation. He remembered the strange golden key he had discovered tucked inside Thaddeus’s personal diary upstairs. Rushing back up the cellar stairs, he retrieved the ornate key from his coat pocket with trembling haste. When he inserted the key into the floating holographic keyhole, the miniature planets instantly locked into a new alignment. A deep, resonant chime echoed through the entire building, shaking dust from the high vaulted ceiling. The walls of the vault slid apart silently, revealing an expansive underground chamber filled with shimmering brass machinery.

Charting the Void

The newly revealed underground chamber stretched out beneath the foundation as far as the lantern light could reach. Thousands of hanging pendulums swung in synchronized harmony, creating a hypnotic, rhythmic ticking sound. Alden walked along the metal catwalk, marveling at the sheer complexity of the pre-industrial engineering before him. In the center of the chamber stood a massive vertical cylinder filled with a swirling luminescent gas. This gas changed colors from deep indigo to brilliant crimson as the pendulums adjusted their swing frequency. He checked his pocket watch; every second elapsed here seemed to correspond to a decade of movement in the stars above. A brass terminal at the base of the cylinder featured an open slot designed for recording parchment scrolls. Alden unrolled a blank star chart and placed it inside the designated metal tray with cautious reverence. The terminal whirred to life, its mechanical arms sliding across the parchment with incredible speed and precision. In mere moments, the machine etched a detailed map of an undiscovered sector of the galaxy onto the paper. He pulled the chart out, noticing that the ink was still wet and glowed with a faint violet aura. The map pointed toward a coordinate in the southern sky that had always appeared as a dark, empty void. He realized that this void was not empty space at all, but a massive cloaked structure hiding in plain sight.
