Episode 1: The Rustling Field
Agricultural surveyor Julian Vance was hired to evaluate a massive, isolated wheat plantation known as the Whispering Acre in the northern agricultural valley. Arriving at the edge of the property just before dusk, he parked his truck and walked into the field to collect soil and crop samples. As he pushed through the chest-high stalks of golden wheat, a soft, murmuring sound rose from the surrounding vegetation, resembling thousands of tiny voices whispering secrets in unison. Julian stopped and shone his flashlight across the rows, but the wheat heads were completely still, lacking even a gentle evening breeze to rustle the leaves.
Northern Winds
Consulting his digital anemometer, Julian confirmed that the wind speed across the valley was currently zero miles per hour, yet the rustling sound grew louder, shifting from a murmur to a distinct chorus of overlapping whispers. The whispers were speaking in an archaic regional dialect, repeating agricultural instructions, planting schedules, and warnings about an early winter frost that would destroy the entire harvest. Julian knelt down to inspect the root system of the nearest wheat stalk, digging his trowel into the dark earth. As the metal blade struck the soil, the whispering voices stopped instantly, replaced by a deep, subterranean groan that vibrated through the ground.
