The Whispering Grain
Episode 4: Voices in the Chaff
Reaching the stone marker at the center of the acre, Julian brushed away the loose dirt and leaves to read the carved inscription, which bore the names of the missing farmworkers alongside a final, freshly carved entry: Julian Vance, 2026. Panic surging through his veins, he tried to turn back toward the tractor path, but the golden enclosure had sealed shut behind him, leaving no exit in sight. The wheat stalks began to shed their golden grain, raining a heavy shower of chaff down upon his head and shoulders like a burial shroud of dry husks.
The Center of the Acre
Julian fell to his knees as the weight of the falling chaff accumulated around him, burying his legs and anchoring him to the earth beneath the oak tree. The whispering voices surrounded him in a tight circle, their sound merging into a single, resonant hum that vibrated through his bones and clouded his thoughts with a profound, hypnotic lethargy. He closed his eyes against the golden dust, feeling his physical body beginning to take root in the soil, his limbs stiffening and lengthening into fibrous wooden stalks that stretched upward toward the sky.
