The Lanterns of Silent Marsh
Episode 2: Footsteps on the Water
Silas secured his skiff to the rotting pier and stepped cautiously onto the wooden planks, which groaned and flexed under his boots. He picked up the iron lantern, noting that the metal was icy cold to the touch and engraved with nautical symbols from a foreign registry. Suddenly, a sharp splash echoed from the shallow water beneath the floorboards, followed by the distinct sound of barefoot footsteps pacing across the submerged mud outside. Silas shone his high-powered flashlight down into the water, but the beam only pierced a few inches of murky brown liquid before dissolving into nothingness. The footsteps accelerated, circling the perimeter of the cottage with alarming speed, yet no ripples disturbed the glassy surface of the surrounding marsh. A sharp rap sounded against the back wall of the cabin, as if someone—or something—was demanding entry from the exterior side of the rotting timber.
The Amber Glow
Pushing open the warped wooden door of the cottage, Silas stepped into the central room, where a thick layer of dust blanketed the floorboards. In the center of the room stood a heavy oak table, upon which sat a collection of vintage brass navigation instruments and dozens of identical iron lanterns, all unlit. As he set the glowing lantern down on the table, its amber flame suddenly flared, casting long, writhing shadows that detached themselves from the walls and slithered across the floor. The instruments on the table began to tick mechanically, their rusted needles snapping into alignment and pointing directly toward Silas’s chest. A cold draft swept through the broken windows, extinguishing every other light source in the room and leaving Silas illuminated solely by the eerie amber glow of the single lantern he had brought inside.
