Episode 1: The Drifting Light

The coastal wetlands of Oakhaven Bay were perpetually choked by a thick, briny fog known locally as the Veil. Coast Guard technician Silas Vance was stationed at the remote Pelican Point Lookout, tasked with monitoring maritime traffic through the treacherous shallows. On his third night on duty, a pale, amber light flickered out in the middle of the marsh—far beyond the safe navigation channels where no vessel should ever anchor. Silas grabbed his binoculars and focused on the luminescence, watching as the light bobbed rhythmically up and down, defying the gentle, sluggish current of the tidal flats. According to maritime charts, the marsh was entirely impassable by boat due to submerged cypress roots and shifting quicksand pits. Yet the light moved with deliberate purpose, gliding silently across the surface of the black water toward the crumbling ruins of the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage. Silas noted the coordinates in his logbook, wondering if a stranded fisherman was attempting to signal for rescue in the freezing mist.

 Into the Fog

Compelled by duty, Silas prepared his flat-bottomed motorized skiff at dawn, donning heavy rubber waders and a waterproof slicker. The fog clung to his skin like a damp shroud, instantly muffling the engine’s putter into a dull, thumping drone as he navigated into the labyrinth of reeds. The water beneath the hull was unnaturally still, reflecting the grey sky like a polished sheet of pewter. As he approached the location where the amber light had vanished, his compass needle began to spin erratically, pointing in every direction before settling firmly toward the center of the marsh. The smell of salt vanished, replaced by the cloying, sweet stench of rotting vegetation and stagnant peat. Through the swirling mist, the skeletal remains of the keeper’s cottage loomed into view, its roof caved in and its rotting wooden pilings half-submerged in the brackish water. Tied to the rotting dock was a small, rusted iron lantern that burned with a steady, smokeless flame, despite the damp sea air.
