Episode 4: Voices in the Reeds

The stone causeway abruptly terminated at the edge of a deep, circular pool where the black water swirled in a slow, hypnotic vortex. Standing at the water’s edge was a figure clad in a heavy rubberized coast guard raincoat, its back turned toward Silas. The figure turned slowly, revealing a face completely obscured by a crust of salt crystals and tangled seaweed. “You missed the morning watch, Silas,” rasped the entity, using Silas’s exact voice and tone of voice. Before Silas could respond, the figure dissolved into a dense cloud of glowing amber embers that drifted down into the swirling vortex of the pool. The water began to boil violently, releasing a column of hot, briny steam that smelled intensely of deep-sea pressure and decaying marine life.

 The Central Flame

As the steam cleared, the unlit lanterns from the endless cottage materialized around the rim of the pool, their iron casings sinking halfway into the mud. A singular, blinding beam of light shot upward from the center of the vortex, piercing the heavy fog and illuminating the upper atmosphere in a brilliant amber hue. Silas felt a strange weightlessness overcome his limbs, as if his body were no longer bound by gravity or physical mass. He looked down at his hands and saw that his skin was beginning to translucent, glowing with the same soft, amber fire that radiated from the lanterns. The marsh around him transformed into a vast, open ocean, and the whispering voices of the drowned sailors coalesced into a single, harmonious chant welcoming him to the eternal watch.
