The Lanterns of Silent Marsh
Episode 3: Lost Compasses
Determined to retrace his path back to the skiff, Silas grabbed the lantern and bolted toward the doorway, only to find that the exit had vanished behind a solid wall of rotting timber. Panic setting in, he swept the beam of his flashlight across the interior walls, discovering that the cottage’s dimensions were expanding, stretching outward into an infinite labyrinth of empty rooms. Every doorway he opened led to another identical chamber filled with rows of unlit lanterns resting on dusty oak tables. He pulled his digital compass from his pocket, but the digital display was blank, replaced by a scrolling sequence of coordinates that matched the exact location of his current dis orientation. The air grew thinner, laden with the metallic taste of ozone and the distant sound of crashing ocean waves, even though the marsh was miles inland from the open sea.
The Drowned Path
Wandering through the endless succession of rooms, Silas finally stumbled upon a doorway that opened outward into the cold night air of the marsh. He stepped out onto a narrow stone walkway that had not been visible during his initial approach—a raised causeway constructed from dark, basalt blocks that cut straight through the center of the wetlands. On either side of the causeway, thousands of amber lights bobbed just beneath the surface of the water, resembling a submerged city of glowing windows. The voices of unseen sailors rose from the depths, whispering unintelligible sea shanties and fragments of weather warnings. Silas walked forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone, guided only by the distant, solitary beam of the Pelican Point Lookout flashing far away on the horizon.
