Back at Pelican Point Lookout, relief watchman Clara Vance arrived for her shift at dawn, finding the control room completely empty and the main monitoring screens flickering erratically. On the desk lay Silas’s logbook, open to the coordinates he had recorded the previous night, alongside his digital compass and radio transceiver. Clara checked the exterior platform, but the motorized skiff was missing from its moorings below the cliff. Scanning the horizon with her binoculars, she spotted a lone, amber light drifting steadily across the impassable wetlands of Oakhaven Bay—far beyond the navigation channels where no vessel should ever anchor. The light paused for a moment, blinked twice in an unmistakable Coast Guard Morse code signal, and then vanished entirely into the rising morning fog.
Dawn on the Shore
Hours later, the local sheriff’s department recovered Silas’s empty skiff drifting near the western edge of the marsh, its engine cold and its fuel tank completely full. Inside the hull lay a single, rusted iron lantern that burned with a steady, smokeless flame, despite being pulled straight out of the saltwater. When the investigating officers attempted to pick up the lantern, it radiated an intense, freezing cold that frosted the metal surface and chilled their skin to the bone. The search parties combed the wetlands for days, finding no trace of Silas Vance or his personal gear among the tangled cypress roots and quicksand pits. Yet, on every subsequent foggy night along the coast of Oakhaven Bay, fishermen reported seeing a new light joining the amber flotilla deep within the marsh—a light that flickered twice before leading lost travelers straight into the dark abyss.
