Episode 3: The Faint Smile

Navigating the labyrinthine twists, Julian entered a circular gallery where hundreds of antique mirrors hung from the ceiling on heavy brass chains, swinging gently in an invisible breeze. Every mirror showed a different version of his past—himself as a child, himself as an old man, and himself lying motionless on an autopsy table. In the center of the gallery stood an ornate gilded vanity table supporting a single hand mirror with an ivory handle. Julian approached the vanity, compelled by an invisible magnetic pull, and looked down into the hand mirror. The glass did not reflect his face; it displayed a live feed of the real-world Veridith Manor exterior, where municipal police officers were standing around an ambulance, shining flashlights into the dark windows of the estate.

 Following the Copy

Desperate to reach the exit shown in the hand mirror, Julian ran down a straight corridor of mirrors that stretched into infinity. However, no matter how fast he sprinted, the distance between him and the end of the corridor remained unchanged. Ahead of him, the double walked at a leisurely pace, turning around every few yards to check his progress with a faint, mocking smile. Julian realized that the maze was not a physical structure, but a closed optical loop designed to trap his consciousness inside the reflective medium while his physical body remained comatose in the central chamber. Every step he took forward inside the maze merely pulled his soul deeper into the silvered glass of the mirrors.
