The Mirror Maze of Veridith
Episode 2: The Still Image
Trapped within the glass corridors, Julian pressed his palms against the cold surface of the mirror, searching for a seam or a hidden latch to pivot the pane. His reflection in the glass raised its hands as well, but instead of touching the surface, the double pressed its palms flat against the interior side, as if trying to push its way out into the physical world. Julian gasped, stumbling backward as the reflection stepped forward, parting the glass surface like a heavy silk curtain and emerging into the corridor beside him. The entity looked identical to Julian in every detail, down to the smudge of silver polish on his cheek, yet it radiated an intense, freezing cold that frosted the surrounding mirrors with intricate, spider-web frost patterns.
Fractured Light
The double spoke in a low, hollow voice that echoed from every mirror in the labyrinth simultaneously: “You built the cage, Julian. Now you must test the glass.” Before Julian could respond, the entity dissolved into a flurry of razor-sharp glass shards that whistled through the air and embedded themselves in the surrounding panels without shattering them. Each embedded shard acted as a new lens, bending the ambient candlelight into blinding, prism-like beams of crimson and violet light that disoriented his sense of balance. Julian stumbled forward through the shifting corridors, guided only by the sound of his own frantic breathing bouncing off the glass walls in a chaotic acoustic maze.
