Episode 10: Forgotten Ground

The overgrown ruins of the abandoned agricultural settlement of Old Hollow lay shrouded in a thick, twilight fog that drifted across the dead fields like a creeping tide. Explorer Lyra Thorne crept cautiously through the skeletal remains of a burnt-out farmhouse, her flashlight beam cutting through the gloom to illuminate water-stained floorboards and fallen ceiling beams. She was searching for the subterranean storm cellar where local farmers had supposedly hidden their seed vaults before the great dust storms forced the abandonment of the valley. Her partner, a rugged scout named Kian, waited outside by the perimeter fence, keeping watch for any signs of automated patrol drones. Lyra pushed aside a pile of rotted timber with her boot, revealing a heavy iron ring set into the stone foundation floor. With a grunt of effort, she heaved upward, pulling the rusted iron plate free with a dull, sucking sound that disturbed decades of accumulated dust. As the cellar opening was exposed, a rush of cold, perfectly preserved air billowed upward, carrying no smell of decay, but rather the crisp, sterile scent of an active, subterranean laboratory humming quietly in the dark.

Final Dust

High atop the ruined observation spire of the Central Weather Bureau in Neo-Veridia, atmospheric analyst Vanya Thorne stood at the precipice of the open-air platform, the howling night wind whipping her heavy coat around her shoulders. Below her, the sprawling subterranean city and its surrounding badlands stretched out into the darkness, completely dead and silent, its lights extinguished by the cascading system collapse. In her hands, she clutched a sealed glass jar containing the final, condensed sample of the anomalous mineral dust that had swept across the continent. The jar hummed violently in her grip, vibrating with a warm, pulsing energy as the surrounding air pressure dropped to near-zero. Vanya closed her eyes, listening intently as a familiar, human voice—her missing research partner’s voice—spoke from her pocket radio, reciting a final set of coordinates and whispering: “The stratum has settled, Vanya. The lock is clear. Step through.” She took a deep breath, raised her eyes to the ash-choked horizon where the first pale light of a new dawn was beginning to pierce through the gray haze, and unscrewed the lid of the jar, releasing the final dust into the wind.
