Echoes in the Dust
Episode 09: Shifting Stratum
Deep within the exploratory mining tunnels of Sector Seven, deep beneath the basalt plains of Onyx-Reach, chief mining engineer Rian Vance stared at the massive digital readout console mounted on the bulkhead of the excavation shield. The tunnel boring machine had ground to an abrupt, screeching halt as its diamond-tipped cutting head struck an impenetrable layer of unknown density—a stratum that did not appear on any geological survey maps. Rian adjusted his protective hardhat and keyed his radio handset. “Engineering team, report status on the primary cutting head,” he barked into the mic. The radio crackled with static before his lead technician, Alistair, replied from the control cabin. “We’re dead in the water, Rian. The torque meters are maxed out, and the drill bit isn’t cutting the rock—it’s melting. The temperature at the face is climbing by ten degrees every minute.” Rian grabbed his flashlight and sprinted down the narrow catwalk toward the boring head, the air growing progressively hotter and heavier with every step. When he reached the cutting chamber, he found the massive steel teeth of the drill glowing cherry-red, pressing against a sheer, mirrored wall of synthetic obsidian that stretched endlessly into the subterranean darkness, pulsing with a rhythmic, subterranean light.
The Dry Relic
Inside the high-security vault of the Museum of Lost Civilizations in the desert metropolis of Veridun, curator Maren Vance adjusted the humidity controls on the glass display case housing the “Dry Relic”—an ancient, mummified hand encased in a block of solidified amber resin, recovered from an unmapped desert tomb. The museum was deathly quiet, closed to the public for the night, save for the rhythmic patrolling of the security guards outside. Maren leaned closer to the glass, examining a peculiar fracture line that had recently appeared across the surface of the amber block. As she watched, a fine line of golden dust began to filter out from the fracture, settling onto the velvet floor of the display case in the precise shape of a geometric compass rose. A sudden, sharp rap echoed from the reinforced window behind her, making her jump. She spun around, shining her flashlight toward the glass, only to see the reflection of a hooded figure standing silently in the courtyard below, holding a matching amber artifact that pulsed with an identical golden glow.
