Episode 06: Scraped Surface

In the high-security subterranean vault of the Ministry of Antiquities, conservator Mara Vance worked under the blinding glare of an articulated surgical lamp. Before her on a padded titanium tray rested the “Scraped Surface”—a massive, rectangular slab of polished basalt recovered from an unauthorized dig site in the southern badlands. The slab’s front face had been intentionally abraded by unknown vandals, obliterating the ancient inscriptions that once covered it, leaving behind a chaotic expanse of fine scratch marks and powdered stone dust. Mara adjusted her polarized spectacles, using a micro-vacuum to gently lift the accumulated stone dust from the micro-grooves etched into the basalt. Her supervisor, Director Thorne, stood in the doorway of the vault, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched her progress with impatient eyes. “We need those glyphs translated before the ministerial delegation arrives tomorrow, Mara,” Thorne stated flatly. “The security council believes this stone holds the cipher to the regional defense grid.” Mara didn’t look up from her work, concentrating entirely on a particularly deep cluster of parallel scratches near the lower right corner. As the micro-vacuum cleared away the last remaining layer of basalt powder, she realized with a start that the scratch marks were not random vandalism at all; under high magnification, they formed a precise, holographic micro-circuit etched directly into the stone matrix, pulsing with a faint, residual electrical charge.

The Desert Cipher

The sweltering heat of the Salt-Flats of Oraya radiated upward in shimmering waves, baking the abandoned ore-processing station where cryptographer Alistair Vance sat hunched over a battered field desk. The station was a concrete shell half-buried under drifting dunes of white salt and fine sand. Alistair was attempting to decode a series of intercepted radio transmissions that had been bouncing off the upper ionosphere for weeks, repeating an identical numerical sequence that matched the latitude and longitude of the abandoned facility itself. His field radio sputtered a sharp burst of static, followed by the familiar, rhythmic tapping of the automated broadcast. Alistair’s fingers flew across his mechanical decoding typewriter, stamping ink-black characters onto a continuous roll of yellow paper tape. His partner, a rugged scout named Kael, stood by the window, sweeping the horizon with a pair of brass binoculars as a distant dust cloud grew larger in the north. “They’re moving fast, Alistair,” Kael called out, his voice laced with tension. “A full mechanized patrol from the capital, and they aren’t stopping at the outer perimeter.” Alistair ripped the paper tape from his typewriter, scanning the decoded text with widening eyes as the message finally revealed its true meaning—the numerical sequence wasn’t a set of coordinates, but a countdown timer pointing to the exact moment the ore station’s subterranean reactor core was programmed to initiate an emergency thermal purge.
