The Abandoned Station
Episode 2: Guiding Frequencies
Clicking on his high-lumen tactical flashlight, Julian swept the beam across a vast, circular chamber dominated by the massive iron counterweights and gear trains of the clock mechanism high above. The digital receiver in his pocket continued to chirp, its frequency shifting dynamically to guide him toward a secondary service entrance tucked away beneath the primary staircase. He descended a flight of crumbling stone steps into the sub-basement levels, where the ambient sounds of the surface storm faded into an eerie, sepulchral silence. The walls here were lined with old ceramic electrical insulators and thick copper cables that ran downward into the subterranean depths like the veins of a mechanical beast. As he walked, the receiver’s audio output transformed from a rhythmic pulse into a clear, synthesized voice repeating a single geographic coordinate string over and over again. Julian recognized the coordinates—they pointed directly to the central passenger platform of the abandoned pneumatic railway station located two hundred feet beneath the city streets.
Heavy Oak
Julian reached the end of the stone staircase, coming face-to-face with a massive barrier of heavy oak timbers bolted across the entrance of the subterranean tunnel system. Someone had barricaded the passage from the outside using thick structural beams and industrial steel brackets, indicating that the station had been intentionally sealed long after its official abandonment. He unclipped a heavy crowbar from his messenger bag, wedging the steel tip between the rotting oak timber and the stone door frame to leverage the boards loose. The old wood groaned under the pressure, resisting his efforts until the rusted iron bolts finally snapped with sharp, echoing reports that reverberated through the tunnel. He shoved the heavy timber aside, clearing enough space to squeeze through the jagged opening into the dark, echoing expanse of the subterranean railway platform beyond. The beam of his flashlight cut through the gloom, illuminating rows of rusted passenger cars resting silently on tracks covered in decades of dust and debris.
