Episode 3: Cellar Doors

Stepping onto the historic passenger platform, Julian felt a sudden rush of cool, pressurized air sweep across his face, carrying the faint scent of ozone and electrical discharge. The platform was immense, its vaulted ceiling supported by rows of cast-iron columns painted in flaking Victorian green enamel. In the center of the platform stood an ornate ticket kiosk, its glass windows shattered and its interior littered with decaying paper tickets and rusted ticket-punching machines. He walked toward the main tunnel archway where the railway tracks disappeared into the Stygian blackness of the underground bore. Set into the floor beside the tracks was a pair of heavy iron cellar doors labeled ‘Pneumatic Maintenance & Pressure Control,’ identical to the illustrations in the historical journal. The doors were unlocked, resting slightly ajar with a thin wisp of pale white vapor curling upward from the gap between the metal panels. Julian gripped the iron handles, pulling the doors open to reveal a steep vertical maintenance shaft descending into the glowing depths of the primary station below.

 Unlatched

Looking down the vertical maintenance shaft, Julian saw a series of glowing amber indicator lights reflecting off the metal rungs of a companion ladder. The station below wasn’t dead or abandoned; active electrical power was surging through its hidden grid, powering equipment that had been dormant for decades. He began climbing down the ladder, his boots ringing rhythmically against the metal rungs as he descended deeper into the subterranean silence. The air grew noticeably warmer and drier as he approached the lower level, losing the damp, stagnant quality of the upper tunnels. As his boots touched down on the concrete floor of the station below, he realized he was standing in the immaculate control room of the pneumatic railway terminal. The consoles were pristine, featuring rows of analog dial gauges, glowing vacuum tubes, and flickering CRT monitors displaying real-time seismic data from across the valley. In the center of the room sat an empty leather swivel chair, its seat still warm to the touch as if someone had been sitting there mere moments before his arrival.
