The Abandoned Station
Episode 4: Wide Open
Julian approached the main control console, examining the glowing CRT monitors that displayed live feeds from security cameras positioned across the entire abandoned railway district. The cameras were panning smoothly, tracking movement in the streets above and the tunnels below with automated precision. He realized the entire subterranean station was fully operational, serving as an unacknowledged command and communication relay managed by an unknown entity. A sudden electronic chime echoed from the console, and a line of green text scrolled across the central monitor screen: Terminal Access Granted. Welcome, Historian Vance. Julian froze, his fingers hovering over the plastic keyboard as the realization struck him—the system had been expecting him, anticipating his arrival based on his archival research at the university. Before he could process the implications, the heavy steel security shutters dropped over the exterior ventilation shafts with a deafening metallic crash, sealing the underground station hermetically.
Descent into Darkness
Plunged into a sudden state of enclosure, Julian watched as the emergency lighting strips along the ceiling shifted from amber to a harsh, clinical white, illuminating the entire control room with blinding clarity. The pneumatic doors on the opposite side of the platform hissed open with a cloud of compressed air, revealing the interior of a sleek, modern passenger carriage waiting on the tracks. An automated public address system crackled to life overhead, its speakers broadcasting a synthesized voice that echoed off the vaulted station walls. Boarding sequence initiated. Departure to the Inner Sanctum in three minutes, the automated voice announced calmly, repeating the directive in a rhythmic loop. Julian stepped back toward the maintenance ladder shaft, but the heavy iron cellar doors at the top had slammed shut and bolted themselves from above, cutting off his only escape route to the surface. Trapped on the underground platform with no physical way back, he made a calculated decision—he walked across the concrete floor and stepped through the open sliding doors into the waiting passenger carriage.
