Episode 1: The Empty Seats

Archivist Julian Vance was assigned to catalog the municipal assets of the abandoned Wonder Park amusement grounds on the outskirts of the city before demolition began. Walking through the overgrown midway under the pale moonlight, he reached the grand Victorian carousel pavilion, its ornate wooden horses standing frozen beneath a peeling canvas canopy. As he approached the ticket booth, the massive steam-driven carousel began to spin on its own, its brass gears grinding into motion with a deafening screech of ungreased iron. The calliope organ flared to life, wheezing out a distorted, slow-motion rendition of a traditional carnival waltz. Julian froze, watching the empty wooden horses rise and fall in a hypnotic rhythm as they circled the darkened pavilion.

 Park Gates

Determined to cut the power supply to the pavilion, Julian searched the perimeter of the carousel for the main electrical breaker box, pushing through waist-high weeds and rusted fencing. The park gates behind him slammed shut with a heavy, echoing thud, and a thick, unnatural iron padlock materialized on the chain, locking him inside the abandoned grounds. When he shone his flashlight toward the entrance, the rusty iron gates were suddenly brand new, painted in glossy black enamel as if the park had just opened for business. The distant roar of metropolitan traffic vanished, replaced by the faint sound of phantom crowds murmuring and laughing in the surrounding shadows.
