Returning to the central pavilion, Julian saw that the entire carousel was now ablaze with thousands of flickering incandescent bulbs that cast long, distorted shadows across the midway. The wooden horses—carved to resemble fierce war chargers and mythical beasts—were moving faster now, their glass eyes glistening with wet reflection as they stared directly at him. On the velvet-trimmed bench seat of a mirrored chariot, a small porcelain doll sat bolt upright, wearing a lace dress and holding a silver ticket in its painted fingers. As the platform spun past him, the doll turned its head with an audible crack of porcelain, locking its unblinking blue gaze onto his face.

The calliope music shifted from a waltz to a high-pitched, discordant lullaby that seemed to vibrate directly inside Julian’s dental fillings, causing a sharp, nauseating pain behind his eyes. He stumbled up the wooden steps of the pavilion and stepped onto the rotating platform, reaching out to grab the brass pole of a prancing white stallion to steady his balance. The moment his gloved hand touched the metal, the rotation speed doubled, creating a centrifugal force that made it nearly impossible to keep his footing. The surrounding park landscape blurred into a swirling vortex of neon color and shadow, trapping him in the spinning machine.
