Episode 5: Fading Melody

The platform groaned and settled into stillness, the wooden horses locking back into their static, frozen poses beneath the peeling canvas canopy. The skeletal riders dissolved into piles of grey dust that blew away on a sudden gust of wind, leaving Julian slumped over the saddle of the white stallion, gasping for breath. He unbuckled the strap, tumbled off the horse onto the wooden deck, and crawled toward the pavilion steps, his hands shaking uncontrollably. Looking back at the ride, the painted horses looked completely normal once more, resting quietly in the dim morning light.

 Morning Rust

Hours later, municipal demolition crews arrived at the Wonder Park gates with heavy machinery, unlocking the rusted chains to begin clearing the site. They found the grand Victorian carousel rusted solid, its gears jammed permanently with a mangled iron clipboard bearing the initials of Julian Vance. Inside the ticket booth, a single porcelain doll sat on a dusty shelf, holding a silver ticket in its hand. The crew manager checked his clipboard, noting that the archivist assigned to the site had failed to check in that morning and could not be reached by phone, leaving his leather briefcase abandoned on the steps of the pavilion.
