Episode 4: The Midnight Scheme

Trapped behind the steel blast doors, Alistair used his portable diagnostic kit to hack into the corridor’s local electronic control box. Sparks flew from the panel as he bypassed the security relays, slowly forcing the heavy steel door upward with a groaning screech of stressed metal. Crawling through the gap into the main submarine drydock, they found Victor Thorne and his syndicate associates loading crates of gold bullion onto an electric transport rail car. Thorne turned around, holding a detonator switch with a cold, mocking smile. “You’re too late, Dr. Vance. The charges are set to flood this entire cavern the moment I press this button,” Thorne threatened, keeping his thumb resting over the trigger. Inspector Sterling raised his service weapon, stepping cautiously forward. “Drop the detonator, Thorne. There’s no escape route left,” Sterling warned. Thorne laughed darkly, pressing his thumb down hard onto the button.

The Tide Turns

Instead of a catastrophic explosion, a dull metallic click echoed through the cavern, followed immediately by the automated klaxons of the facility’s emergency flood valves opening. Alistair had used his hack not only to open the door, but to override the syndicate’s detonation sequence and reverse the tidal pumps, flooding the subterranean drydock with seawater. Torrents of ocean water cascaded down the concrete access tunnels like a roaring waterfall. Thorne panicked, dropping the useless detonator as he scrambled toward the upper gantry stairs to escape the rising water. The tactical team converged on Thorne and his associates, tackling them onto the metal walkway and slapping handcuffs on them just as waist-high seawater surged into the drydock chamber. Alistair and the federal agents scrambled up the vertical escape ladder, hoisting themselves out through the seabed hatch just as the entire subterranean facility was completely submerged once more by the returning ocean tide.
