Episode 1: The Deep Beam

The salty spray of the underground ocean crashed against the jagged basalt cliffs of the cavern wall. Silas adjusted the heavy brass oil valves of the great lantern atop the subterranean lighthouse tower. Below him, the pitch-black waters stretched out infinitely, unbroken by any shore or horizon. His father had tended this beacon before him, and his grandfather before that, maintaining the eternal warning light. Today, however, the beacon’s lens was throwing a fractured beam that swept erratically across the stone vault. Silas checked the mercury float basin; a pocket of heavy gas had bubbled up from the magma vents below. He unlatched the glass service door and bled the pressure valve, listening to the hissing release of sulfur. The beam stabilized instantly, projecting a powerful shaft of golden light piercing the subterranean gloom. As the light cut through the mist, it illuminated something bobbing on the dark waves far out in the sump. It was not driftwood or wreckage, but a small metallic vessel moving against the underground current. Silas grabbed his heavy brass spyglass from the desk and focused the lenses on the drifting craft. A lone figure stood at the bow of the vessel, waving a signal lantern toward the lighthouse tower.

Crust and Lamp

Silas cranked the brass pulley hoist to lower the maintenance cage down the sheer cliff face to the water’s edge. The salt-crusted iron cables shrieked in protest as the cage descended toward the turbulent subterranean tide. He stepped out onto the slippery stone landing platform, holding his hand lantern high against the damp wind. The small metallic vessel glided smoothly into the cove, its hull hissing as it brushed against basalt. A young woman wearing a thick waterproof canvas coat stepped ashore, clutching a heavy leather satchel tightly. “Are you the keeper of the Deep Beam?” she asked, her voice echoing sharply off the high cavern ceiling. “I am Silas, and you’ve sailed into waters where no surface craft is supposed to travel,” he replied firmly. The woman opened her satchel, revealing a cluster of glowing marine crystals pulsing with an urgent blue light. “My name is Mara, and I came from the Sunless Trench; our community beacon has failed completely,” she explained. Silas examined the crystals, noting their energy signatures were identical to the fuel powering his own lighthouse. “If your beacon died, the trench dwellers have lost their only navigation guide through the fault maze,” Silas realized. He invited her up the cliff hoist to the warmth of the lighthouse tower to plan their next move.
