The Subterranean Lighthouse
Episode 3: Light Beneath the Fault
Silas descended the spiral stairs three at a time, rushing down into the dark stone foundation chamber below. The foundation pillars were groaning under the immense weight of the shifting basalt ceiling overhead. Water was pouring through a new fissure in the rock wall, threatening to flood the electrical junction box. Silas waded into the freezing knee-deep water, wrestling with the heavy manual bulkhead valves to divert the flow. With a supreme effort of strength, he turned the wheel until the water pressure sealed the new fissure shut. He wiped sweat and salt water from his forehead, checking the electrical circuits with a testing meter. The circuits were intact, humming with the steady energy supplied by Mara’s marine crystals upstairs. Panting heavily, he climbed back up to the lantern room where Mara was maintaining the beam alignment. “The foundation is secure, Mara; how is the beam holding up against the tectonic interference?” he asked. Mara pointed to the optical dial, which showed a steady ninety-eight percent transmission efficiency rating. “The turquoise beam has penetrated the Sunless Trench; look down through the glass floor panel,” Mara smiled. Silas looked down through the reinforced glass floor, seeing a distant answering beam flashing from the deep trench.
The Blind Watchman
The answering flashes from the Sunless Trench formed a complex navigational code used by the ancient trench mariners. Silas translated the flashes using his father’s maritime codebook resting on the windowsill. “They are guiding a refugee convoy up through the fault channel right now,” Silas announced grimly. “If we lose the beam for even a second, the convoy will crash against the jagged basalt reefs.” Mara took her place beside him at the optical controls, helping adjust the lenses to compensate for rising steam. Hours passed as they worked in perfect synchronization, sweeping the turquoise beam across the treacherous underground waters. Through his spyglass, Silas spotted the first of the trench vessels emerging safely from the narrow fault channel. One by one, small metal boats carrying exhausted trench families glided into the safe harbor cove below. An old man with a long white beard stepped ashore from the lead vessel, leaning on a polished driftwood staff. He looked up toward the lighthouse tower, raising his hand in a gesture of profound gratitude and respect. Silas felt a lump form in his throat; generations of his family had kept this light burning for moments like this.
