Episode 2: Guiding the Stone

Inside the stone-walled study of the lighthouse, Silas poured two mugs of hot tea from a copper kettle. Mara warmed her hands on the ceramic mug, explaining the catastrophic failure that had plunged her trench into darkness. “A subterranean tremor shifted the tectonic fault line, crushing our primary crystal generator shaft,” Mara said. “Without light, the blind leviathans of the trench are wandering upward toward the populated shipping lanes.” Silas studied his nautical charts of the underground fault network spread across his heavy oak desk. “We can’t send a repair crew down there without a guide beam from the surface side,” Silas noted. “My beacon can provide that guide beam, but our oil reserves are only sufficient for three more nights.” Mara reached into her satchel and placed three glowing marine crystals onto the wooden table surface. “These crystals will burn ten times hotter and longer than your whale oil ever could,” Mara offered. Silas picked up one of the crystals, feeling a surge of clean, stable energy pulse through his fingers. “If we integrate these into the lighthouse burner, we can cast a beam strong enough to reach the Sunless Trench,” he said. They immediately climbed the spiral stairs to the lantern room to begin the delicate conversion process.

The Subterranean Coast

Working through the night, Silas and Mara dismantled the old oil burner and fitted the marine crystals into position. As Silas struck the ignition flint, the crystals flared to life with a brilliant, piercing turquoise flame. The lighthouse lens caught the turquoise beam, magnifying it into a massive column of light that bored downward. Outside, the beam illuminated an entire subterranean coastline of ancient stone docks and ruins previously hidden. Mara gasped, looking out the glass panes at the vast underground landscape revealed by the enhanced light. “I haven’t seen the old docks since I was a child,” Mara whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. Suddenly, the ground beneath the lighthouse trembled violently as a massive pressure wave rolled through the cavern. The seismic shock rattled the glass panes in their iron frames, threatening to shatter the entire lantern housing. Silas braced himself against the brass pedestal, shouting over the roaring din of shifting stone. “The tectonic fault is moving again; we have to stabilize the lighthouse foundation immediately!” Silas yelled. He grabbed his heavy iron wrench and bolted toward the basement structural support struts to inspect the damage.
