Episode 07: The Tint of Autumn Gold

Painter and portraitist Julian Vance had spent the autumn months isolated in a converted stone barn in the rural valley of Oakhaven, attempting to capture the changing colors of the dying foliage on canvas. His studio was flooded with the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun streaming through a massive, northern-facing skylight tinted with an antique golden amber film that gave every landscape an ethereal, timeless glow. Julian sat before his easel, applying thick dabs of cadmium yellow and burnt sienna to his canvas, but he felt an inexplicable sense of dread gnawing at his stomach. Every time he looked through the golden skylight at the autumn woods outside, the trees did not look healthy or vibrant; through the amber tint, the forest appeared dead, skeletal, and dripping with a thick, tar-like black fluid. He rubbed his eyes, thinking the tint was playing tricks on his vision, and stepped outside the barn to check the trees with his naked eyes. Under the natural gray sky of late November, the woods were normal—bare branches, brown leaves, damp earth. Relieved, he returned inside his studio and resumed painting as dusk began to settle over the valley. But when he looked back up at the amber skylight, the golden tint had deepened into a dark, coagulated blood-red. Through the stained glass, the world outside was no longer the Oakhaven valley; it was a burning, ash-choked wasteland populated by towering, shambling silhouettes of black smoke that were slowly surrounding his barn. He ran to the studio door to flee, but found that the heavy wooden latch had been welded shut by a thick crust of hardened tree sap that pulsed with a slow, organic heartbeat.

The Crack in the Looking Glass

In the cramped, dimly lit dressing room of her decaying family estate in Ashen-Cove, ballerina Clara Vance prepared for an imaginary performance before a grand, full-length antique mirror framed in blackened brass. Clara had lived alone in the cavernous manor since the tragic fire that claimed her parents’ lives, spending her days practicing pirouettes in the ballroom and her nights locked in her dressing room. Across the center of the grand mirror ran a long, jagged spiderweb crack—the result of an impact from years ago that her father had never repaired. Clara stood before the glass in her tattered white tutu, her pale face gaunt and hollow-eyed, watching her reflection move with fluid grace. But as she executed a slow grand plié, she noticed something horrifying: the jagged crack in the mirror did not align with her reflection’s body. The fissure in the glass passed directly across her reflection’s throat, slicing open a deep, bleeding gash that began to pour dark red crimson down the surface of the silvered glass. Clara gasped, dropping her pointe shoes to the floor with a dull thud, and instinctively brought her hands up to her own neck, checking her skin. Her throat was entirely smooth, unbroken, and dry. Yet, as she stared back into the glass, her reflection reached up with shaking, blood-soaked hands and peeled away a layer of its own skin along the crack, revealing the hollow, writhing black void beneath. The glass crack began to widen, snapping apart with a loud, metallic ping as the reflection stepped forward, forcing its way out of the broken mirror and leaving a trail of wet, shattered glass across the dressing room floor.
