Episode 2: Sealed Envelope

Unfolding the rag paper document, Arthur found a secondary compartment beneath the velvet lining of the rosewood box containing a sealed vellum envelope. The envelope was addressed to an unknown recipient at the abandoned observatory atop Miller’s Crag, bearing no return address or postal stamps. He held the envelope up to the amber glow of the desk lamp, trying to discern the contents through the thick, fibrous parchment without tearing the seal. The outline suggested a single folded card inscribed with heavy iron-gall ink, possibly containing sensitive codes or compromising financial ledgers. Arthur’s pulse pounded in his ears as he weighed his options: deliver the envelope as instructed and risk entangling himself further, or burn the contents in his fireplace and pretend nothing happened. Before he could make a decision, a sharp knock echoed against his apartment door, followed by the heavy thud of a boot heel testing the frame. The floorboards in the hallway groaned beneath the weight of someone standing immediately outside his threshold, silently demanding entry. Arthur froze, extinguishing the desk lamp with a trembling hand and plunging the room into shadow while clutching the vellum envelope to his chest. The doorknob slowly turned, rattling the internal latch as the intruder applied steady, deliberate pressure to force the compromised lock.

 The Wave Symbol

Utilizing the split-second distraction of the rattling doorknob, Arthur slipped through his bedroom window onto the narrow stone ledge that spanned the rear facade of the apartment block. The damp night air stung his face as he inched along the masonry, peering through the windows of neighboring flats where oblivious residents sat eating dinner. He scrambled up a rusted iron drainpipe to the sloping slate roof, crouching low behind a brick chimney stack to evade detection from the alley below. Peering down into the cobblestone courtyard, Arthur saw a figure in a dark trench coat emerge from his apartment building’s back exit, examining a small parchment map by the light of a flickering gas lamp. On the back of the map, illuminated by the yellow flame, was a distinct insignia: a stylized wave symbol intersecting a vertical dagger. Arthur recognized the emblem from local broadsheets warning of an underground resistance faction known as the Tidalist Brotherhood, long thought eradicated by the magistrate’s guard. The courier mission wasn’t a random criminal errand; it was a classified dispatch intended to ignite a civil insurrection within the city’s stratified districts. Shivering from the cold and adrenaline crash, Arthur tucked the vellum envelope deeper inside his inner coat pocket and began picking his way across the treacherous rooftops toward Miller’s Crag.
