Episode 4: The First Clue

Left stranded in the dark, Arthur dropped to his hands and knees, sweeping his palms across the dusty floorboards to find an alternate way out before the guards breached the inner chamber. His fingers brushed against a cold, metallic object dropped by the fleeing woman during her hurried exit through the floor hatch. He grabbed the object, slipping it into his pocket before scrambling behind a massive, toppled quadrant mount just as the heavy oak doors were kicked wide open. Flashlights swept the interior, casting harsh white beams across the debris-littered floor as Veriditas guardsmen advanced with drawn sabers. Arthur held his breath, pressing his back flat against the rusted iron framework while the patrol leader barked orders to search every corner of the dome. As the search party moved toward the opposite side of the room, Arthur carefully pulled the recovered object from his pocket and examined it by the faint amber glow of his watch dial. It was a heavy silver signet ring engraved with the crest of the Veriditas Department of Public Works—the very department where he worked as a humble archive clerk. The realization hit him like a physical blow: the conspiracy extended deep into the municipal administration, and his own superiors were orchestrating the entire political drama from behind the scenes.

 Whispers at the Door

Utilizing a momentary lapse in the guards’ attention while they inspected the upper gallery stairs, Arthur slipped through the open floor hatch into the narrow maintenance chute below. The chute sloped steeply downward through the limestone cliff, serving as an old pneumatic mail transport line that had been abandoned for decades. He slid on his back through the narrow metal pipe, scraping his elbows against the riveted seams until he tumbled out into the overgrown overgrown courtyard behind the city archives. The rain had intensified into a steady downpour, washing the sulfurous fog from the air and leaving the cobblestones slick and glistening under the gas lamps. Arthur limped back toward his apartment on Ironmonger’s Row, his clothes soaked through and his muscles aching from the grueling physical ordeal. As he reached the front stoop of his building, he noticed that the heavy oak door to his flat was standing wide open, splintered around the lock housing. Drawing the silver signet ring from his pocket, he crept cautiously up the wooden staircase, his heart hammering against his ribs like a war drum. The hallway was dead silent, save for the rhythmic dripping of a leaky pipe somewhere on the upper landing. He peered into his apartment, seeing his drafting table overturned and his archives ransacked by someone looking for the rosewood box.
