Episode 5: The Unread Message

Stepping past the splintered door frame, Arthur surveyed the wreckage of his home with a mix of fury and paralyzing dread. The intruders had torn open his filing cabinets, scattered his reference books across the floorboards, and smashed his desk lamp into a heap of sharp glass fragments. Yet, they had missed a crucial detail: before leaving for Miller’s Crag, Arthur had hidden the original rag paper document and the brass key inside the hollow base of a heavy cast-iron mantle clock. He walked over to the mantelpiece, carefully unscrewing the back panel of the clock to retrieve the hidden items unharmed. Attached to the back of the paper document was a small, previously unnoticed strip of microfilm containing micro-photographed architectural blueprints of the city’s central magistrate chambers. Arthur held the microfilm up to the flickering streetlamp outside his window, squinting to make out the intricate network of hidden escape tunnels and armory vaults. It wasn’t just a political pamphlet; it was a blueprint for a synchronized coup d’etat scheduled to take place during the upcoming Founder’s Day banquet. He realized with absolute clarity that possessing this microfilm made him the most dangerous man in Veriditas, hunted equally by the corrupt magistrate’s guard and the radical Tidalist Brotherhood.

 Threshold of Secrets

Dawn broke over Veriditas, casting long, pale shadows across the rain-slicked limestone arches of the lower merchant districts. Arthur Pendelton stood before the grand bronze doors of the Central Archives, dressed in a clean clerk’s uniform and carrying a locked steel briefcase containing the microfilm and the silver signet ring. He bypassed the public entrance, using his staff keycard to access the secure sub-basement levels where historical land grants and municipal blueprints were stored away from prying eyes. As he walked down the dimly lit corridor, he noticed that the security cameras had been systematically disabled and the biometric locks were flashing amber error codes. He reached the master archive vault, its heavy titanium door standing slightly ajar with the internal locking mechanism jammed by a wedge of wood. Stepping inside the cool, climate-controlled vault, Arthur found the city’s Chief Archivist—his direct superior—waiting calmly beside the central reading table with a cup of steaming black coffee. The archivist smiled warmly, gesturing for Arthur to take a seat across from him as if they were merely preparing for a routine Monday morning audit. “You found the key, Arthur,” the archivist said softly, his voice echoing off the endless rows of steel shelving. “Now, are you ready to learn who truly runs this city?” Arthur placed the briefcase on the table, his hand resting on the latch as the heavy vault door slowly swung shut behind him with a final, echoing thud.
