Episode 3: Delivery in the Dark

Navigating the upper tiers of Veriditas after curfew required utilizing suspended timber walkways and abandoned cargo hoists that spanned the cavernous chasms between limestone cliffs. The wind howled through the structural gaps, threatening to tear Arthur’s cloak away as he hauled himself up the rusted framework of a disused coal crane. Below him, the twinkling gas lamps of the merchant district looked like distant stars trapped in a bottomless abyss of fog and shadow. Every creak of the old timber bridges sounded like snapping bone, heightening his terror of plunging into the darkness below. As he reached the base of Miller’s Crag, the skeletal dome of the abandoned observatory loomed against the churning gray sky like a giant, sightless eye. The heavy oak doors at the entrance stood slightly ajar, creaking rhythmically on rusted iron hinges as the coastal draft swept through the rotting interior. Arthur drew a deep, ragged breath, clutching the brass key and the sealed vellum envelope in his damp palm as he stepped across the threshold into the gloom. The interior was littered with shattered glass, fallen plaster, and the rusted remains of massive brass telescope mountings that cast monstrous shadows across the circular floor. A single candle flickered atop a packing crate in the center of the dome, casting an orange halo around a waiting figure wrapped in a dark velvet cloak.

 Vanishing Act

Arthur froze just inside the observatory entrance, his boots crunching softly on a scatter of broken glass that echoed loudly in the cavernous dome. The cloaked figure by the packing crate did not turn around immediately, but instead raised a gloved hand to signal silence. “You are late, Pendelton,” a raspy, modulated voice echoed through the circular chamber, sending a shiver down Arthur’s spine. “The magistrate’s hounds have been sniffing around the lower districts sooner than anticipated.” Arthur stammered out an excuse about the blocked alleyways and heavy patrols near Ironmonger’s Row, holding out the rosewood box and the vellum envelope. The figure turned slowly, lowering a heavy velvet hood to reveal the sharp, lined face of an elderly woman with piercing gray eyes. She snatched the envelope from Arthur’s trembling grip, tearing the seal with practiced efficiency to inspect the enclosed card. Suddenly, a blinding beam of light cut through the shattered glass dome above, accompanied by the distinct clatter of iron-shod boots scaling the exterior observatory stairs. “They tracked us here,” the woman hissed, extinguishing the candle with a swift pinch of her fingers and plunging the room into total darkness. Before Arthur could react, a trapdoor in the wooden floor slammed shut with a hollow boom, leaving him entirely alone in the pitch-black dome as shouting voices echoed from the entrance archway.
