Episode 1: The Golden Mist

Architectural historian Julian Vance was walking home through the historic district of Ravenwood on a damp autumn evening when a dense, unusual fog rolled in from the river. The fog was not the usual grey or white mist; it glowed with a warm, amber-luminous hue that illuminated the cobblestone streets like gas lamps. As Julian turned onto Amber Street—a quiet residential lane lined with Victorian townhouses—he noticed that all the windows of the houses were completely dark, and not a single sound of traffic or human activity emanated from the buildings. The amber mist grew thicker, smelling faintly of pipe tobacco, old parchment, and melting wax.

 Frozen Screens

Reaching his apartment building on Amber Street, Julian pushed open the heavy front door and stepped into the lobby, expecting to find the usual hum of activity. Instead, the lobby was frozen in time: a resident was standing by the mailboxes holding an envelope, completely motionless; a wall clock had stopped at exactly 11:42 PM; and the air was thick with suspended dust motes that did not fall to the floor. Julian checked his wristwatch, but the second hand was stuck firmly in place, refusing to tick forward. The digital display on his smartphone was completely blank, its screen unresponsive to touch.
