The Fog of Amber Street
Episode 3: Streetlamps Out
As Julian reached the circle of light beneath the streetlamp, the overhead bulb flickered once and shattered, plunging him into total, amber-tinted darkness. The streetlamp post behind him groaned and twisted like melting wax, bending down toward the ground as the ambient light vanished. From the surrounding darkness, the whispering voices of the frozen residents began to echo through the mist, reciting fragments of conversations, daily schedules, and private regrets that had been captured and preserved within the fog.
Whispers Through the Glass
Julian pressed his back against the brick wall of a nearby townhouse, looking through the ground-floor parlor window into the dark interior. Through the glass, he saw himself sitting in an armchair by the fireplace, reading an old book by the light of a kerosene lamp, completely unaware of the world outside. The interior figure turned its head slowly, looked out through the window pane, and pressed its palm against the glass, mouthing a silent warning that Julian could not hear over the ticking of the phantom clocks.
