The Hidden Compartment
Episode 05: The Pocket Watch That Stopped
With only sixty minutes remaining before midnight, Arthur hurried back down to the ground floor, his mind racing through the memorandum book’s financial entries to determine where the final piece of evidence might be concealed. His search led him to the small, wood-paneled smoking room adjacent to the grand entrance hall—a dark, claustrophobic space filled with velvet armchairs and glass-fronted cabinets displaying old gentleman’s accessories. On the mantelpiece above the cold marble fireplace rested a collection of vintage timepieces left behind by Lord Blackwood. Among them was a heavy, open-faced gold pocket watch suspended from a small brass stand. Arthur walked over, picking up the watch to inspect it, noticing that its gold hands were completely frozen. The pocket watch had not stopped from a lack of winding; the internal balance wheel was deliberately jammed by a tiny folded piece of paper wedged between the glass crystal and the dial face. Using the tip of his iron chisel, Arthur carefully popped open the crystal bezel and extracted the tiny paper scrap with his tweezers. Unfolding the paper under the light of his torch, he saw a short sequence of numbers written in Lord Blackwood’s shaky handwriting: 14-8-3. It was a numeric combination, but what did it unlock? As Arthur pondered the numbers, the grandfather clock in the hall outside began its slow, heavy countdown toward midnight.
The Photograph With Torn Edges
Armed with the numeric combination 14-8-3, Arthur rushed back to the private library where his journey had begun, heading straight for the massive mahogany bookshelves that lined the northern wall. He scanned the shelves until he found a section containing nineteenth-century volumes on regional architecture, counting fourteen shelves up, eight books in from the left, and pulling out the third volume—a heavy tome titled The Foundations of Blackwood. As he pulled the book forward, a hidden spring mechanism clicked, and a small, leather-bound photograph album popped out from a secret recess behind the shelf. Arthur opened the album on the library table, flipping through pages of sepia-toned portraits of Victorian gentlemen and ladies standing before the manor. On the final page, he found a photograph with heavily torn edges, as if someone had deliberately ripped another person out of the frame. The remaining half showed Lord Blackwood standing beside a younger, smiling man wearing the exact same silver signet ring Arthur had seen on the mysterious intruder in the courtyard. Stamped on the back of the photograph was an address in the neighboring town of Oakhaven: 44 Gallows Lane. The mystery was expanding beyond the walls of the manor, pointing directly toward a physical location where the final truth awaited him.
