Episode 07: The Keyhole Behind the Painting

Arriving at 44 Gallows Lane—a narrow, decaying Victorian townhouse squeezed between two shuttered shops—Arthur found the front door standing slightly ajar, creaking softly in the damp night wind. He stepped inside into a dark, abandoned hallway that smelled of stale tobacco and melting candle wax. The interior was stripped of all furniture, save for a single, imposing oil painting hanging on the far wall of the parlor: a somber portrait of a nineteenth-century sea captain whose painted eyes seemed to follow him across the room. Remembering the clues he had gathered, Arthur approached the painting and gently lifted its heavy gilded frame away from the wall. Behind the canvas, set directly into the plaster, was a small, ornate iron keyhole—the exact aperture designed to fit the carved ivory key he had recovered from the cedar box hours ago. With trembling fingers, Arthur withdrew the ivory key from his waistcoat pocket and inserted it into the hidden keyhole. It slid home with a smooth, oiled precision, and when he turned it counter-clockwise, the entire section of the parlor wall swung inward on silent hinges, revealing a secret study bathed in the warm, yellow glow of an electric desk lamp that was currently plugged into a modern extension cord.

The Ledger of Forgotten Accounts

Stepping through the secret wall-panel into the hidden study, Arthur found himself standing in a room that looked like a modern command center grafted onto a nineteenth-century foundation. Bank statements, property deeds, and computer printouts were scattered across a large oak desk, alongside an open laptop displaying financial spreadsheets tracking the liquidation of Blackwood Manor’s assets. Resting in the center of the desk was a massive, leather-bound ledger labeled Forgotten Accounts—the financial ledger documenting every bribe, payoff, and fraudulent transaction executed by Marcus Thorne to secure his fraudulent claim over the estate. Arthur stepped forward, pulling a small camera from his coat to photograph the compromising documents before Thorne could return. As the camera’s flash illuminated the room, a loud, metallic click echoed from the doorway behind him. Arthur spun around to find Marcus Thorne standing in the secret doorway, no longer wearing his fedora, holding a heavy service revolver pointed directly at Arthur’s chest with a cold, terrifying smile on his face.
