The Hidden Compartment
Episode 08: The Document That Changed Hands
“You’ve been remarkably persistent, Mr. Pendelton, but curiosity is a fatal trait in an archivist,” Marcus Thorne said, his voice eerily calm as he stepped further into the secret study, closing the escape route behind him. Arthur kept his hands raised, his fingers still clutching the camera containing the photographic evidence of the ledger. “The microfilm and the ledger expose everything, Thorne; you can’t bury a century of fraud with a bullet,” Arthur replied, his voice steady despite the dark barrel pointed at his heart. Thorne chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Fraud? My family built this estate with our bare hands before your precious Blackwood ancestors forged the deeds in eighteen-ten. Hand over the camera and the ledger, Arthur, and I’ll let you walk out of here with your pension intact.” Arthur feigned compliance, slowly reaching into his coat pocket as if retrieving the camera’s memory card. Instead, he gripped the carved ivory key tightly, and with a sudden, violent motion, hurled his heavy brass torch directly into the glass shade of the desk lamp. The bulb shattered in a shower of sparks and darkness, plunging the hidden study into pitch blackness as a deafening gunshot cracked through the room, embedding a lead bullet deep into the wooden wall right where Arthur had been standing a fraction of a second before.
The Drawer That Stayed Locked
In the sudden, absolute darkness of the secret study, Arthur dove behind the heavy oak desk, his heart hammering against his ribs as he heard Marcus Thorne cursing in the dark, sweeping his revolver back and forth across the room. “You can’t hide in the dark forever, archivist! The building is surrounded!” Thorne shouted, firing a second wild shot that splintered the edge of the bookshelf above Arthur’s head. Feeling along the floorboards in the dark, Arthur’s hand brushed against a heavy iron floor-safe tucked beneath the desk—a small compartment that had remained closed during his initial survey of the room. Remembering the numerical combination 14-8-3 he had found in the pocket watch, Arthur felt blindly across the safe’s mechanical dial. He spun the dial to fourteen, clicked it back to eight, and finished on three. With a heavy, satisfying metallic clunk, the safe door popped open. Reaching blindly inside, his fingers brushed against a heavy, cold metal object: a spare revolver left behind by Thorne’s grandfather. Arthur gripped the grip of the weapon, pulling it free just as Thorne struck a wooden match, illuminating the dark study with a tiny, flickering yellow flame that revealed Arthur rising from behind the desk with his weapon leveled directly at the intruder’s chest.
