Episode 08: The Bell That Rung Backward

The imposing stone bell tower of St. Jude-in-the-Fens loomed over the foggy marshes on the outskirts of Oakhaven, its massive bronze bell—cast in 1701 and known locally as Iron Gabriel—having remained silent since the great plague year. Parish vicar Father Thomas Vance climbed the creaking wooden interior stairs of the tower, holding a heavy iron lantern to illuminate his path through the swirling dust and cobwebs. He was investigating reports from local fishermen who claimed they had heard the bell tolling out across the marshlands at midnight, calling the dead from their graves. Thomas was a man of firm faith who dismissed such stories as superstitious nonsense born of marsh gas and alcohol, determined to prove that the old bell clapper was securely chained and bolted in place. He reached the belfry chamber at the top of the tower, stepping out onto the open stone balcony where the freezing wind whipped his clerical robes around his legs. In the center of the chamber hung Iron Gabriel, a three-ton behemoth of green-patinated bronze covered in Latin inscriptions and grotesque gargoyle reliefs. Thomas approached the massive bell, holding his lantern up to inspect the iron hanging chains. To his profound shock, the heavy iron chains were not locked or bolted; they were swaying gently back and forth in the dead, windless air of the belfry. Before he could turn to flee, the massive bronze tongue of Iron Gabriel swung outward with immense, unnatural speed, striking the inside of the bell casing. But the sound it produced was not a deep, resonant peel that carried forward through time; it was a harsh, shattering backward shockwave of audio energy that sucked the breath from his lungs and hurled him backward against the stone parapet, while every clock, watch, and heartbeat within a five-mile radius stopped dead in its tracks.

The Merchant’s Golden Lever

In the opulent, velvet-draped private parlor of his mansion on Gilded Hill, wealthy shipping tycoon and industrialist Montgomery Vance sat alone in front of a roaring coal fire, swirling amber brandy in a crystal snifter. Montgomery was a man who had built his immense fortune on ruthless exploitation, smuggling, and the acquisition of illicit antiquities from ruined civilizations. On the mahogany table beside his velvet armchair rested his most prized, secret possession: the Golden Lever—a heavy, eighteen-karat gold control rod mounted in a carved marble base, recovered from an unmapped subterranean vault beneath the desert. The lever featured three distinct operational settings: PAUSE, ACCELERATE, and REVERSE. Montgomery smiled to himself, swirling the liquor as he contemplated the sheer power he held over time itself. For years, he had used the lever sparingly to gain unfair advantages in business negotiations and political rivalries, turning seconds into hours when he needed time to think. But tonight, as the grandfather clock in the hallway struck midnight, the marble base of the lever began to vibrate with intense, scorching heat. The gold rod itself shifted position on its own accord, clicking violently from the ACCELERATE setting straight past PAUSE and locking itself firmly into the terrifying REVERSE position. Montgomery sprang from his armchair in sudden terror, reaching out to grab the golden lever and force it back, but as his fingers closed around the metal handle, a blinding flash of golden light erupted from the marble base. His aging body violently convulsed as time began to unspool backward through his veins—his gray hair darkening, his wrinkles smoothing away, his memories dissolving into nothingness, until his adult form shrank down, vanished into infancy, and ceased to exist altogether within the span of three agonizing heartbeats.
