Episode 1: The Heavy Fog
The towering iron airship Nimbus Crawler drifted silently through a dense blanket of grey stratocumulus clouds. Captain Maeve adjusted her pneumatic winch controls, feeling the massive copper-mesh net strain against the vapor. As a master cloud-harvester, her mission was capturing heavy moisture blocks to supply parched lowland cities. Today, however, the fog density was abnormal, laden with a thick metallic dust that clogged the intake turbines. Maeve pulled her respirator mask over her mouth, stepping out onto the catwalk of the open-air harvesting deck. Below the ship, the endless sea of mist obscured the ground completely, creating an eerie, floating isolation. She inspected the primary retention net, noticing strange glowing filaments tangled within the copper mesh wires. These filaments were synthetic fiber-optic cables pulsing with encrypted data signals instead of water vapor. She unhooked her handheld diagnostic scanner, pressing its probe against one of the glowing alien filaments. The scanner screen flashed a series of red warning codes indicating unauthorized corporate surveillance activity. Someone was using the high-altitude cloud cover as a covert data-transmission network across the continent.
Metal in the Mist
Maeve hauled the tangled fiber-optic cable aboard the harvesting deck, securing it with a heavy steel clamp. She carried the cable into the ship’s laboratory, placing it onto her workbench for a detailed examination. Her chief engineer, a grizzled veteran named Bram, walked in holding a steaming mug of coffee. “That’s not weather debris, Captain; that’s military-grade optical cabling used by the Aetheria Corporation,” Bram noted. Maeve frowned, plugging the cable into her laboratory terminal to trace the signal origin back through the grid. The terminal decode revealed that the Aetheria Corporation was funneling stolen financial data through cloud relays. By using water vapor as a natural conductive shield, their transmissions remained completely invisible to ground radar. “If we harvest this cloud batch into our municipal water tanks, we’ll contaminate the whole city’s supply,” Bram warned. Maeve pulled up the ship’s navigation map, noting they were drifting directly toward an Aetheria relay station. “We need to intercept their transmission array before we drop anchor at the lowland trade port,” Maeve decided firmly. She set a new course toward the coordinates of the hidden cloud-station floating in the mist.
