The Cloud-Harvester's Net
Episode 2: Trawling the Vapor
The Nimbus Crawler glided stealthily through the fog, its engines muffled by dampening blankets of thick mist. Ahead of them, the massive silhouette of the Aetheria cloud-station loomed like a floating industrial fortress. Searchlights swept across the vapor clouds, casting stark white beams that cut through the gloom. Maeve ordered Bram to deploy the heavy tungsten-carbide grappling hooks toward the station’s mooring platform. With a loud metallic thud, the hooks bit securely into the station’s outer structural railing framework. “Boarding party, get your gear ready; we’re paying the corporation an unexpected visit today,” Maeve announced. She strapped her utility belt around her waist, checking her pneumatic grappling pistol and data-spooling deck. Along with Bram and two experienced deckhands, she crossed the taut tension cable leading to the platform. The station’s exterior catwalk was slick with condensation, slippery and exposed to the howling high-altitude winds. They slipped past the security perimeter doors into the dimly lit interior of the floating research facility.
The Suspended Cargo
Inside the station, rows of massive data servers hummed with high-voltage electricity and cooling fans. The air smelled of ozone, hot plastic, and stale recycled oxygen circulating through the ductwork. Maeve led her team down the central corridor toward the master transmission control room at the core. They ducked behind server racks as armed corporate security guards patrolled past with laser rifles drawn. Reaching the heavy steel door of the control room, Bram set a small plasma charge on the lock. With a muffled pop, the locking mechanism melted away, and Maeve kicked the door wide open. The chief technician inside spun around in shock, dropping his coffee mug onto the metal floor tiles. “Step away from the master transmitter console, or you’ll trigger the facility self-destruct sequence,” Maeve warned. The technician raised his hands slowly, stepping back from the glowing keyboard array without a word. Maeve connected her data-spooling deck to the master port, beginning the download of all operational files.
