Episode 4: Hauling the Cloud

“Drop the anchor now!” Maeve shouted over the deafening roar of thunder through the open bridge windows. Bram pulled the heavy winch lever down hard, sending the massive electromagnetic pulse anchor plummeting downward. The anchor struck the center of the Aetheria cloud-station’s primary transmission dish with devastating kinetic force. A brilliant flash of blue electricity radiated outward from the impact point across the entire floating facility. Instantly, all searchlights, monitors, and data servers aboard the station went completely dark and dead. The station began to lose altitude, its anti-gravity stabilization fields failing due to the EMP discharge. Maeve banked the Nimbus Crawler away from the descending wreckage, circling safely above the storm clouds. Through her spyglass, she watched the Aetheria station drift down toward uninhabited lowlands under emergency parachutes. The corporate weather-conspiracy was effectively shattered, neutralizing their regional monopoly ambitions for good.

 The Hidden Alloy

Returning to the municipal trade port, Maeve delivered the recovered data files to the regional council authorities. The council acted swiftly, issuing arrest warrants for Aetheria Corporation executives and seizing their assets. The citizens of the lowland cities cheered the cloud-harvesters as heroes of the high-altitude skies. Maeve received a commendation and a government contract to supply clean moisture blocks to all public reservoirs. Yet she remained humble, returning to the decks of the Nimbus Crawler with her loyal crew. As she inspected the ship’s copper-mesh nets, she noticed a peculiar lightweight alloy fragment snagged in the wire. She brought it to Bram, who analyzed its molecular structure under the laboratory microscope with intense curiosity. The alloy was unknown to modern metallurgy, bearing markings that hinted at origins beyond the atmosphere. Maeve smiled, pocketing the mysterious fragment as she plotted a course toward the uncharted upper stratosphere.
