The Cloud-Harvester's Net
Episode 3: Nets of the Sky
The download progress bar crawled across her screen as massive amounts of encrypted data transferred to her deck. Suddenly, alarms wailed throughout the station, flashing crimson emergency lights across the control room walls. “We’ve tripped their automated firewall backup; security forces are converging on our position,” Bram shouted urgently. Maeve tapped her keyboard furiously, rushing the final compilation script to complete the data extraction process. The download completed with a satisfying chime just as heavy boots echoed outside the open doorway. Maeve unplugged her data deck, grabbing a smoke grenade from her belt and tossing it outside. Thick grey smoke flooded the corridor, causing the incoming security guards to cough and lose their footing. Maeve and her team fought their way back to the mooring platform across the tension cable. They hauled themselves back aboard the Nimbus Crawler just as the station’s automated defense turrets activated. Maeve slammed the throttle forward, lifting the airship up into a thick cloudbank to evade enemy fire.
The Storm Anchor
Safe within the upper cloud layers, Maeve analyzed the downloaded data files on her cabin terminal screen. The files contained undeniable proof that Aetheria Corporation intended to weaponize weather control systems nationwide. They planned to induce artificial monsoons to flood rival trade ports and monopolize regional agricultural markets. To prevent this, Maeve and Bram devised a plan to drop an electromagnetic pulse anchor into their cloud relay. The EMP anchor would permanently fry the station’s data transmission arrays without harming innocent civilian infrastructure below. However, deploying the anchor required flying directly into the eye of an active storm cell surrounding the station. Maeve gripped the ship’s steering wheel with absolute determination, pointing the Nimbus Crawler toward the lightning. The airship shuddered violently as gale-force winds and torrential rain battered its hull from every conceivable angle. Bram operated the winch release mechanism in the cargo bay, waiting for the precise moment to drop the EMP.
