Episode 03: The Stone Marker With No Edges

Rising from the center of the frozen valley like a monolith of primordial dread stood the Boundary Marker—a massive, twenty-foot-tall pillar of dark, polished basalt that defied every rule of geometry and physical architecture. Thaddeus and Caleb approached the structure cautiously, their footsteps making no sound against the white limestone dust. As Thaddeus reached out to run his gloved hand along the surface of the pillar, his fingers met with a profound sensory contradiction. The stone appeared to have sharp, clean corners and flat rectangular faces when viewed with the naked eye, but the moment physical contact was made, the pillar felt entirely smooth, spherical, and warm to the touch, possessing no edges, no seams, and no discernible beginning or end. When he walked around to the opposite side of the monolith, he realized with a jolt of pure horror that the pillar was not standing on the ground at all; its base hovered precisely two inches above the valley floor, supported by nothing, while thousands of tiny, microscopic human teeth were embedded in the stone matrix like gravel in concrete, grinding against one another with a low, continuous chatter. Caleb pointed a shaking finger toward the upper portion of the basalt shaft, where a series of deep, freshly carved gouges spelled out their own names—THADDEUS and CALEB—followed by a tally mark numbering forty-seven days of isolation, though they had only been on the mountain for less than twenty-four hours.

The Trail of the Faceless Wanderer

Leaving the monolith behind, the two men followed a narrow, winding goat track that ascended steeply toward the upper crags of Mount Oros. The white limestone dust had been replaced by a fine, black ash that coated their boots and filled their lungs with the acrid taste of burnt bone. Ahead of them in the dim, shadowless glare, a lone figure trudged unsteadily along the path—a figure wearing the tattered gray parka of the missing meteorological team. They quickened their pace, shouting out across the desolate slope, hoping to find a survivor who could explain the horrifying nature of the mountain. But as they closed the distance, they noticed that the wanderer was not walking forward; his body was facing backward while his legs marched steadily up the incline, his heels striking the ground with a rhythmic, sickening crunch of displaced gravel. When Thaddeus lunged forward to grab the man’s shoulder, the figure spun around in a sickening, three-hundred-and-sixty-degree rotation that snapped his neck joints with a loud pop. The man had no face—where his eyes, nose, and mouth should have been, there was only a smooth, pale expanse of skin identical to the mountain stone, across which a fresh, weeping wound was slowly opening to reveal a row of tiny, wet mechanical gears turning in frantic synchronization with their own racing pulses.
