Episode 04: The Ridge of Clear Air

They broke out onto the narrow, knife-edged spine known as the Ridge of Clear Air, where the sulfurous mist and gray ash suddenly vanished, replaced by an atmosphere of terrifying, absolute transparency. Here, the air was so thin, pure, and devoid of particulate matter that light passed through it without obstruction, creating an optical illusion that they were walking on empty space high above a world that had ceased to exist. Looking down to their left and right, they could no longer see the valleys, the forests, or the lower slopes of Mount Oros; they saw only an endless, starless void of absolute, crystal-clear nothingness that stretched downward for eternity. Caleb stopped walking, his breathing shallow and rapid as he clutched his chest, gasping for oxygen that felt too light to sustain his life. “The air is too clean, Thaddeus,” Caleb choked out, falling to his hands and knees on the razor-sharp limestone ridge. “There’s nothing in it—no dust, no moisture, no bacteria. It’s stripping the nitrogen right out of my blood.” Thaddeus knelt beside his partner, trying to administer oxygen from their emergency medical kit, but when he opened the metal valve of the canister, the compressed gas hissed out and immediately vanished into the clear air without a trace, leaving behind a freezing frostbite burn across his knuckles that took on the precise shape of a human handprint.

The Wind That Carried No Echo

A sudden, violent squall struck the ridge without warning, but it was a wind unlike any meteorological event known to science. It made no sound as it tore across the limestone crags—no rushing hiss, no whistling through the rocks, no rustling of clothing. It was an absolute, vacuum-driven gale of total silence that battered their bodies with tremendous physical force while leaving their eardrums ringing with a high-pitched, agonizing frequency. Thaddeus grabbed a protruding outcrop of rock with both arms, anchoring himself against the invisible tempest, while Caleb was swept off his feet by a sudden gust, sliding backward down the slippery limestone slope toward the edge of the crystal-clear void. Thaddeus screamed out a warning, but his voice was swallowed instantly by the silent wind, not even generating a local vibration in the air. He lunged forward, extending his heavy leather belt toward his sliding partner just as Caleb slipped over the precipice. Thaddeus caught Caleb’s outstretched wrist in a desperate, white-knuckled grip, hauling him back onto the narrow ridge with every ounce of strength remaining in his trembling arms. But as Caleb collapsed onto the stone, gasping for breath, Thaddeus looked down at his own hands in absolute horror: his fingers had left deep, permanent impressions in the solid limestone rock as if the stone had the soft consistency of wet clay, and his voice was gone, replaced by a low, mechanical whirring sound coming from deep within his own throat.
