The Shadowless Ridge
Episode 05: The Cabin of the Unseen Miller
Sheltered within a recessed limestone alcove just beneath the final summit ridge stood a strange, windowless wooden cabin constructed from gray, brine-soaked timbers that looked as though they had been salvaged from a wrecked shipwreck on a distant ocean. A thin wisp of gray smoke curled from a rusted iron stovepipe protruding from the roof, carrying the rich, toasted scent of freshly milled wheat flour. Driven by exhaustion and freezing temperatures, Thaddeus and Caleb pushed open the heavy, unlatched oak door and stumbled inside out of the silent gale. The interior was a cavernous, dimly lit room dominated by a massive pair of basalt millstones turning slowly in the center of the floor, grinding white grain into fine flour. Yet, there was no waterwheel, no animal harness, and no human miller tending the heavy stones; the millstones were turning entirely on their own, driven by an invisible axle embedded in the bedrock. A wooden table near the stone hearth was set with three steaming bowls of hot bread soup and three wooden spoons, as if expecting guests. Caleb, driven mad by hunger and fatigue, rushed to the table and sank his spoon into the soup, ignoring Thaddeus’s frantic warnings. As Caleb swallowed the first spoonful, his eyes rolled back into his head, and he began to cough up fine, white wheat flour instead of blood, his skin rapidly drying out into a hard, brittle crust of baked dough as he stood frozen like a statue beside the table.
The Well of Bright Water
Leaving the petrified form of Caleb standing frozen beside the table like a pillar of bread, Thaddeus fled deeper into the rear chambers of the seaside cabin, which opened directly into the heart of the mountain’s limestone bedrock. In the center of a damp, vaulted grotto sat an ancient stone well surrounded by glowing, bioluminescent fungi that cast a harsh, emerald-green radiance across the damp walls. Peering over the low stone rim of the well, Thaddeus looked down into the water, expecting to see his own reflection staring back up at him. Instead, the water was glowing with an intense, blinding white luminescence—the “Bright Water”—shining with the concentrated power of a thousand suns captured in a subterranean cistern. As he stared into the blazing depths, the water began to bubble and rise, forming translucent, fluid hands that reached up over the stone rim to stroke his face with a warmth that felt like liquid fire. He tried to pull away, but his legs refused to move, anchored to the stone floor by roots of glowing fungi that had sprouted from his boot leather, drinking his blood and pumping the blinding white water directly into his veins until his eyes turned into glowing pearls of pure light.
