The Shadowless Ridge
Episode 07: The Bridge Across the Bright Chasm
Spanning the massive, glowing fissure that cut the flat plateau in half, a delicate bridge constructed from woven beams of pure sunlight connected the two halves of the summit. Thaddeus approached the edge of the chasm, looking down into the boiling sea of white illumination below where the roots of the mountain tapped directly into the core of the earth. Without hesitation, he stepped out onto the bridge of light, his glowing boots finding solid purchase on the radiant beams that hummed with a high-pitched, harmonic vibration like a struck harp string. As he crossed toward the western side of the plateau, the chasm beneath him began to sing—a chorus of thousands of voices harmonizing in an ancient, forgotten language that told the story of a world that existed before light and shadow were divided. At the far end of the bridge stood a massive, iron-bound door set into a towering basalt archway, bearing no handle or lock, waiting for the touch of someone whose shadow had been completely burned away.
The Silence of the Open Summit
Thaddeus pressed his glowing palms flat against the cold iron surface of the vault door, and with a heavy, resonant groan that shook the foundations of the peak, the massive barrier swung inward on silent hinges. He stepped across the threshold into the Sanctum of the Open Summit—a circular chamber carved directly into the highest point of the mountain, open to the sky yet completely untouched by wind or weather. The room was utterly silent, devoid of the humming machinery, the whispering winds, or the chattering teeth of the lower slopes. In the center of the chamber rested a simple stone pedestal holding a heavy, open leather ledger—the master logbook of Mount Oros. Thaddeus walked to the pedestal, his heavy footsteps echoing with a clear, bell-like tone across the stone floor, and looked down at the parchment pages. The ledger was filled with names, dates, and detailed accounts of every human being who had ever climbed the bare mountain, recording their final thoughts down to the microsecond of their transformation. And on the blank final line of the open page, written in glowing white ink that matched the light in his own veins, was his own name: Dr. Thaddeus Holt—Arrival Complete.
