Episode 1: The Endless Step
Structural engineer Julian Vance was hired to inspect the historic municipal archives beneath the old city hall following a minor seismic tremor. Descending past the standard basement levels, he discovered a heavy iron hatch that had previously been sealed behind a concrete partition. Prying the hatch open revealed a massive, spiraling stone staircase plunging straight down into absolute darkness, completely unrecorded on any modern architectural blueprints. Julian clicked on his heavy-duty headlamp and stepped onto the first stone tread, his boots echoing with a sharp, hollow ring against the granite. As he descended past the tenth step, the iron hatch above him clicked shut with a deafening slam, locking automatically into place. When he rushed back up and shoved against the barrier, it refused to budge, leaving the subterranean descent as his only viable path forward.
Descending Stone
For over an hour, Julian walked downward, counting his paces to maintain his sanity in the monotonous, windowless environment. The air grew progressively colder and drier, carrying a faint, metallic scent of ozone and ancient dust that tickled his throat. Every hundred steps, a small, recessed alcove appeared in the stone wall, containing nothing except a pile of grey ash and an empty iron oil lamp. Julian checked his digital altimeter, but the screen was malfunctioning wildly, flashing negative altitude figures that suggested he was already miles beneath the Earth’s crust. Yet, the physical architecture remained remarkably pristine, constructed from massive, perfectly interlocking stone blocks that showed no signs of weathering or structural decay.
