The Subterranean Staircase
Episode 5: Turning Back
Realizing that climbing upward was a futile endeavor, Julian made the desperate decision to turn around and run back down toward the chamber he had originally fled. He raced down the twisting steps in a blur of motion, ignoring the burning pain in his knees and the failing light of his flashlight. As he burst back into the subterranean chamber, the wooden chair and the pile of notebooks were gone, replaced by a massive, polished iron door set directly into the limestone wall. The door was unlocked, its heavy handle cool and welcoming against his palm, offering a direct route away from the collapsing staircase.
The Bottomless Run
Julian threw the iron door open and lunged through the threshold, expecting to find the brightly lit municipal basement or the familiar city streets above. Instead, he tumbled headfirst into a sheer, vertical wind tunnel that dropped straight down into infinite space, surrounded by a swirling vortex of glowing stone steps. As he fell through the endless void, the iron door slammed shut above him with a final, echoing crash, locking away the light forever as he plummeted deeper into the earth.
