The Subterranean Staircase
Episode 3: Fading Light
Julian’s headlamp flickered violently, its battery indicator dropping from full to zero in a matter of seconds before plunging the chamber into pitch blackness. Panic tightened its grip around his chest as he fumbled in his pockets for his backup flashlight, his fingers trembling against the cold plastic casing. When he switched the backup on, the beam was painfully weak, casting a sickly yellow glow that barely pierced the heavy darkness just two feet ahead of him. The ambient temperature in the chamber dropped below freezing, causing his breath to plume in the air as thick white clouds. From somewhere deep within the walls, a low, rhythmic ticking sound began to resonate, mirroring the relentless mechanical cadence of a grandfather clock.
The Missing Landing
Seeking escape, Julian rushed back to the spiraling stone staircase and began climbing upward as fast as his burning legs could carry him. He counted the steps desperately, but the numbers no longer made sense; after climbing past five hundred steps, no iron hatch or upper level appeared to interrupt the monotonous geometry of the granite walls. Worse still, every tenth landing he encountered had vanished entirely, replaced by a sheer drop where the stone steps simply terminated in empty air above a bottomless void. He was forced to leap across the gaps in the darkness, guided solely by the weak yellow beam of his failing flashlight and the sound of his own ragged breathing.
