The Subterranean Staircase
Episode 2: The Cellar Floor
After what felt like a descent into an endless abyss, Julian finally reached a flat, stone landing that opened into a vast subterranean chamber. In the center of the room sat a single wooden chair facing a blank limestone wall, upon which rested a pile of modern surveying equipment identical to the kit Julian carried in his own backpack. He approached the chair cautiously, shining his headlamp across the floor, only to discover that the dust beneath his boots was littered with dozens of discarded field notebooks bearing his own handwriting and signature. Opening the top notebook, he read a detailed, blow-by-blow account of his descent down the staircase, written in precise detail right up to the exact second he had stepped into the chamber.
Measured Depths
Determined to find a secondary exit, Julian circled the perimeter of the underground chamber, running his hands along the seamless stone blocks in search of a hidden door or service tunnel. In the far corner, he uncovered a narrow vertical shaft fitted with a rusted metal ladder that stretched upward into the gloom. He climbed the rungs eagerly, hoping the shaft would lead back to the surface streets above the municipal building. However, after ascending for twenty minutes at a steady pace, he emerged not into the daylight, but onto another stone landing that opened into an identical subterranean chamber containing the exact same wooden chair and pile of notebooks. The staircase was not a vertical descent, but a closed, infinite loop engineered to trap explorers in a perpetual descent.
