The Subterranean Staircase
Episode 4: Echoes Below
Pausing on a narrow stone tread to catch his breath, Julian heard a distinct sound echoing up from the depths of the staircase below him—the sound of heavy boots climbing upward in steady, relentless pursuit. He shone his flashlight down into the spiraling shaft, but the beam illuminated only empty steps stretching away into the endless black. The footsteps accelerated, matching his own pace whenever he moved and halting instantly whenever he froze in place. A voice called out from the dark below—a calm, professional voice using Julian’s own tone and vocabulary, asking if he required assistance with his structural inspection report.
The Damp Wall
Leaning against the damp stone wall for support, Julian felt the granite beneath his palm shift and give way under his weight like wet clay. He pulled his hand back, watching as the stone surface dissolved into a thick, black sludge that smelled intensely of stagnant water and decaying organic matter. The sludge began to crawl up his sleeve, burning through his heavy jacket with a mild, acidic heat. He scrambled upward, tearing his skin against the sharp edges of the remaining steps as the entire staircase behind him began to collapse into a cascading torrent of mud and falling granite blocks.
